Sea turtle nesting season has officially begun along Florida's East Coast, with conservation groups ramping up their monitoring efforts to protect these ancient mariners.
What to Know
The nesting season runs from May through October, with peak activity in June and July. Three main species nest on Florida beaches:
- Loggerhead turtles - The most common species
- Green turtles - Increasing in numbers
- Leatherback turtles - The largest sea turtle species
How You Can Help
Beachgoers can help protect nesting sea turtles by:
- Keeping beaches clean and free of obstacles
- Turning off or shielding beachfront lights at night
- Never approaching nesting turtles
- Reporting any injured turtles to wildlife authorities
